The project “Risco”, supported by the “Pôle Mer” and funded by the Regional Council of Brittany, deals with specific risks of mortality of oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated on the bottom, in a subtidal bay of South Brittany : the bay of Quiberon (56, France). Massive mortalities of oysters were reported in summer 2006 in this bay, exclusively located in the deep muddy area with a positive gradient eastward. A validated biogeochemical model was applied in order to simulate the dissolved oxygen over 2000-2006 : it revealed several episodes of hypoxia, more or less intense according to years, but with the same spatial distribution. This approach proved 2006 to be the most hypoxic year since 2000. The hypoxia was due to a rare conjunction of 3 factors :...

L'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas en Bretagne. Résultats du réseau de suivi de 1990 ArchiMer
Le Bec, Claude; Mazurie, Joseph.
The year 1990 is the second of a regional monitoring program on production assessment of Crassostrea in Britlany. 9 sites have been tested with 3 stations per site and 3 oysters bags in each station, at 3 different densities : 170, 210 and 250 oysters per bag. 18 month old oysters stocked in bags in march were analyzed 43 weeks later, by variables concerning growth, survival, quality... The growth was lower at higher densities, more or less according to sites. As previously, differences between sites and stations are observed, with some confirmations (higher mortalities in Aber Benoît site) and also evolutions (growth and Polydora infestations improvement in Pen Bé site).

L'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas en Bretagne. Résultats du réseau de suivi de 1991 ArchiMer
Le Bec, Claude; Mazurie, Joseph.
The year 1991 is the third one of the regional network on growth assessment of Crassostrea gigas in Brittany, wearing on 9 sites and 3 stations per site. 2 bags of 210 oysters, 18 month old, were placed in each station. Comparatively to previous years, the 1991 growth was moderate, and condition index inferior. However, the survival rates were very high (above 91 %) and most of the slight mortalities occurred a short time after stocking (as revealed by the sizes of dead shells). An improvement was also observed in the infestation rate by the polychaete Polydora sp..Most of the growth differences between sites and stations are still present. An analytical study including environmental variables would be necessary for explanations and will be tempted in 1993.

Besse, Thimothee; Mazurie, Joseph.

Modelling Crassostrea gigas growth and reproduction in different contrasted ecosystems by using dynamic energy budgets : generic validation of the oyster-DEB model ArchiMer
Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Le Moine, Olivier; Geairon, Philippe; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Oyster farming is the main aquaculture activity in France, where Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is spatially cultured from the English Channel to the Mediterranean coasts. Oyster growth performance monitored along French coasts are widely heterogeneous among culture sites and over years. Many studies have been carried out to understand the effects of environmental factors on oyster growth and physiology, by using bioenergetics growth models. However, most of these studies were site-specific. As an example, the model developed by Barillé et al. (1997), which was extensively specified with more than 50 parameters, was validated in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, but cannot be successfully applied to other culture sites without re-estimating parameters or...

Modelling spatio-temporal variability of Mytilus edulis (L.) growth by forcing a dynamic energy budget model with satellite-derived environmental data ArchiMer
Thomas, Yoann; Mazurie, Joseph; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bacher, Cedric; Bouget, Jean-francois; Gohin, Francis; Pouvreau, Stephane; Struski, Caroline.
In order to assess the potential of various marine ecosystems for shellfish aquaculture and to evaluate their carrying capacities, there is a need to clarify the response of exploited species to environmental variations using robust ecophysiological models and available environmental data. For a large range of applications and comparison purposes, a non-specific approach based on ‘generic’ individual growth models offers many advantages. In this context, we simulated the response of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis L.) to the spatio-temporal fluctuations of the environment in Mont Saint-Michel Bay (North Brittany) by forcing a generic growth model based on Dynamic Energy Budgets with satellite-derived environmental data (i.e. temperature and food). After a...

Nutrition and reproduction are key parameters in the interaction process leading to Crassostrea gigas oyster summer mortality in France ArchiMer

Complex interactions between oyster, environment and pathogens were observed during the MOREST (2001-2005) project on summer mortality events of Crassostrea gigas oysters in France. The talk will show how nutrition level increasing reproductive intensity generates a risk for pathogen infection under synergistic effect of temperature and stress. Moreover, a genetic component is associated to specific reproductive performances and spawning behaviour. To better understand origin of such resistance or susceptibility to summer mortality, other characteristics as stress susceptibility, energy management and hemocyte activities of oysters from the two phenotypes were compared. This first comparison suggests interactions between stress, reproduction and defence...

Summer mortality has been reported in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, for many years in Japan, US and Europe. It affects both adults and juveniles and the causes of this phenomenon are complex. Environmental, physiological or pathological putative causes were studied all over the world. Recently, the MOREST project ((MORtalitEStivale) a multidisciplinary project (2001-2005) focused on his problem led to a better understanding of this phenomenon in France. The results showed in these geographical conditions, the main interactions between the oysters, their environment and certain pathogens.

This study is the second part of a former report rapport Ifremer DRV/RST/RA/LCB/2002-08 dealing with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : the first report relied on a survey achieved in july 200l, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. Il is now completed by a last campaign of diving in october 2002, on 7 parcels out of the 18, still bearing the initial oysters. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according...

Cupped oysters, Crassostrea gigas, often suffer abnormal mortalities during summer, at one year of age. Both scientists and professionnals are interested in finding practical methods to reduce these mortalities. The present study tries to answer two questions : 1- are there any differences of summer mortalities among various batches of spat available from spat collection areas (Arcachon and Charentes) ? 2- is it possible to improve summer survivals by wintering the spat at high air exposure locations (« hardening » procedure) ? The first comparison did not reveal any significant difference between the 16 batches of spat tested (mortalities between 5 % and 30 %). The second comparison in the same summer conditions was not able to show to any improvement...

Rapport de mission International Conference on Shellfish Restoration, 2011, Stirling (Ecosse) ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph.
The 14th International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) comes this year to the United Kingdom for the first time in its 26 years history. The conference will be held at the University of Stirling in the heart of Scotland and its title and theme will be “Shellfish: our undervalued resource”. The theme of the conference, “Shellfish: our undervalued resource”, reflects the UK perception of shellfish as something that is good to eat, often in upmarket restaurants. Shellfish fisheries and aquaculture are indeed a very important part of the UK economy; shellfish reefs however form an ecosystem that provides myriad benefits (“ecosystem services”) many of which have been lost through acute fishing pressures, disease, pollution and other factors. Relationships between oyster mortality patterns and environmental data from monitoring databases along the coasts of France ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Ropert, Michel; Mazurie, Joseph; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Le Coz, Florence.
Oyster mortality was monitored at multiple sites along the French coastline (around 5 500 km) between 1993 and 2005. Mortality data for one- and two-year-old oysters were collected over 10–12 years in 39 oyster culture sites bordering 3 different "seas": the English Channel, Bay of Biscaye and Mediterranean. Combining these data with records from environmental monitoring databases, 11 of these sites had consistent chronological data sets including both environmental data and mortality records. Mortality in one-year-old oysters was clearly summer mortality (49% of their annual mortality) whereas mortality of two-year-olds occurred mostly in spring (51%). Analysis of variance revealed that "coastal area" was the main influence on mortality of one-year-olds...

Goyard, Emmanuel; Baud, Jean-pierre; Claude, Serge; Le Moine, Olivier; Maurer, Daniele; Mazurie, Joseph; Ruelle, Francois; Vercelli, Catherine.
The Aquaculture Resources Department's mollusc network (REMORA) federates six coastal Ifremer laboratories. Since 1993, REMORA has implemented a unique national protocol to account for the variability in the growth of Pacific oysters farmed in 39 sites within the main production areas, from Normandy to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1995, the goal of the network was expanded to include monitoring of a second age class. To do so, the protocol developed for adults was adapted to monitor juveniles. The data, organised in Excel worksheets with a specific application written in Visual Basic, allows for inter-station and inter-annual comparisons and thereby constitutes a database of interest to oyster farmers, scientists and administrative personnel.

Littaye-mariette, Anne; Mazurie, Joseph.
Since 1989, an homogeneous Crassostrea gigas oyster stock has been distributed once a year on several rearing sites in Brittany (3 populations per site). The main quantitative and qualitative growth descriptors, which reflect water quality effects during the monitoring period, are estimated at the end of each year. The 1989-1992 analysis prompted us to describe various growth responses correlated to biotops: oyster production in open areas influenced by oceanic waters was fairly constant in quality, including size and Polydora sp. infestation. In contrast, oysters in estuarine areas, partly affected by eutrophication (e.g., Aber Benoît, Pen Bé), or with a low carrying capacity, were characterized by weight and Polydora sp. infestation heterogeneity. These...
